Our Story

High Country Veterinary Services, founded by Dr. Louise Batt in 2013, is a distinguished large animal veterinary practice committed to delivering exceptional care to the residents of the Yampa Valley and beyond. Our team comprises skilled veterinary professionals who share a profound passion for animals, treating each patient with the same level of dedication they would offer their own.

Our mission is to foster, nurture, and strengthen the bond between humans and animals by upholding our core values of accountability, authenticity, excellence, and collaboration. We conduct our practice of veterinary medicine with unwavering integrity and an insatiable curiosity, remaining true to our values and the mission of our practice. Employing a collaborative and personalized approach, we endeavor to ensure our equine patients enjoy optimal health and an exceptional quality of life.

Dr. Louise Batt, BVSc, MRCVS

Veterinarian & Business Owner

Dr. Louise Batt was born and raised in England. She was a member of Pony Club and competed in show jumping and one day eventing. She graduated from the University of Bristol Veterinary School in 2007, and came to the U.S. for an internship in large animal medicine & surgery at Colorado State University. She worked in private practice for several years in southern colorado before moving to beautiful Steamboat Springs in 2013 & founding High Country Veterinary Services. Since then, she has built her practice to serve the horses and livestock of the area with compassion and expertise. Her clinical areas of expertise include advanced dentistry, lameness & injury rehabilitation, and advanced wound care. In her free time she likes to read, ski, go camping & spend time with her husband and their 3 boisterous sons.

Dr. Taylor Karlin, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Taylor Karlin was born in Colorado Springs, but spent much of her childhood living in Steamboat and Maryland. Owning and showing horses in Western Pleasure stemmed her interest in veterinary medicine. She attended the University of South Carolina and received a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She then returned to Colorado for veterinary school and graduated from Colorado State University. Dr Karlin’s areas of interest are in lameness and sports medicine. She is currently undertaking her post graduate certificate in Animal Chiropractic, and is excited to offer Veterinary Equine Chiropractic in spring 2023. In her free time, you will find Taylor outdoors backcountry skiing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting, and kayaking.

Dr. Sarah Barr, DVM

Veterinarian

Dr. Sarah Barr was born and raised in Zanesville, Ohio. She attended the University of Kentucky and received a B.S. in Animal Sciences. She then graduated from Ohio State University in 2006 and spent the following 10 years working with Thoroughbred racehorses up and down the east coast. She left her racetrack family in 2016 to move to the Rocky Mountains. Dr Barr joined HCVS in 2022 and brings her extensive knowledge of lameness diagnostics and treatments as well as acupuncture. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, camping, kayaking, skiing, and snowshoeing with her family.

Sarah Myers, BS

Lead Veterinary Assistant

Sarah was born in Pennsylvania and grew up in Michigan’s lower peninsula. She has always had a love for animals, especially horses which she has been working with and training with since the age of 11. Growing up, she competed in hunter jumper, 4H, and AQHA local circuits. She attended Oakland University graduating with a B.S. in Biological Science in 2016 and promptly moved to Colorado in search of adventure. She spent many years on the front range working for a small animal referral hospital before moving to Steamboat in 2020. Outside of work she loves to trail ride and do liberty work with her four horses, go backpacking and hiking with her dogs, and snowboard during the winter months.

Fritz Boniface

Veterinary Assistant

Fritz was born and raised in Harford County, MD where his family has trained thoroughbreds for generations. In 2016, he decided to move out to Colorado with his bluegrass band, The Deer Creek Sharp Shooters. Although he made the move for music, he quickly realized how much Routt County truly has to offer. In his free time you can find Fritz on the river fly fishing, rafting and kayaking, or in the snow snowboarding, cross-country skiing and touring.

Hayleigh Aurin

Veterinary Assistant

Born and raised in Steamboat Springs, she grew up surrounded by all kinds of animals, including horses, which led her to the University of Wyoming where she earned a degree in Animal and Veterinary Sciences. After college, she returned to Steamboat and has worked on various ranches, working cows, guiding and packing hunters in the mountains, and training horses. She looks forward to working at HCVS to care and spend time with the great horses in this valley.

Gabbi Brault

Front Desk & Veterinary Assistant

Gabbi was born and raised in the Washington D.C. area before moving to Colorado in 2021. She began riding horses at the age of five and competed in the hunter/jumper and equitation circuits throughout her youth. Gabbi rode for the Dickinson College equestrian team and graduated in 2021. In her free time, she enjoys skiing, wake surfing, floating the river, or soaking up the sun with her two cats.

Andrew Stubbs

Client Services Administrator

Andrew was born and raised in Michigan, where he grew up on a boarding farm with around 40 horses. He has an extensive background in client care and customer service. When he is not manning our front desk he is most likely working around his property, exploring the trails, or skiing in the winter.

Our Haul-In Clinic

High Country Vet Services is proud to provide haul-in clinic services located just outside of Steamboat Springs. You can now bring your horse to our facility for greater scheduling flexibility while also enjoying cost savings on farm call fees!

Our facility provides a serene setting complete with examination stocks, a spacious fear-free examination area, as well as pens and holding stalls. Among the wide range of services available here, you can benefit from advanced dentistry, lameness evaluations, and standing surgeries.

Our Retail Store

Our retail store sits conveniently to the north of US-40 on CO-129, providing easy access for our customers. Inside, you’ll find a curated range of essential offerings, including first aid items and kits, over-the-counter medications, deworming products, and premium Triple Crown Feed products. Additionally, our location serves as a convenient hub for picking up prescription medications and settling invoices.
